Scientific expertise:

The group develops specifically adapted biomaterials for various biomedical applications. Often, the focus is not only on optimal biointegration of an implant, but in addition comprises a controlled implant-associated local delivery of drugs and growth factors with temporally adapted release profiles and with release triggered by biological or external stimuli. Typically, nanoporous inorganic materials form the basis of the delivery systems, often in the form of nanoparticles or thin films. The delivery systems are also used for the functionalization of tissue engineering scaffolds for regenerative medicine to release bioactive agents in a temporally and spatially defined manner. With regard to medical applications, the following areas have been studied up to now: middle ear prostheses, inner ear prostheses and other stimulating electrodes (protection of neurons, nerve regeneration), implants and scaffolds related to the musculoskeletal system (bone substitution and regeneration, tendon-bone transition, joint prostheses), dental implants (tooth regeneration). A general topic addressing various implants is the abatement of implant-associated infections.
