On August 19, we were pleased to welcome Prof. Thomas Stieglitz from the University of Freiburg for a fascinating visit to NIFE. The visit focused on neural implants, biomedical microtechnology, and the application of innovative technologies in clinical practice.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stieglitz heads the Freiburg Institute for Microsystems Technology (IMTEK), which is dedicated to interdisciplinary, application-oriented high-tech research. He is a recognized expert in the field of neural implants.

On that day, various panel discussions provided ample opportunity for open, interdisciplinary dialogue.

In his concluding, fascinating presentation, „”Preparation and Investigation of the Material-Tissue Interface Following Explantation of Neural Implants" We learned how neural implants interact with their biological environment over time, how mechanical and chemical influences alter the implant during this process, and how these changes may affect the interpretation of subsequent analyses. Understanding these interactions is crucial for the development of neural implants that must not only remain functional but also be reliable and safe over extended periods of time.

The discussion at NIFE underscored the importance of close collaboration between engineers, researchers, and clinicians for the advancement of implant technology.

Visits like this are an important part of strengthening scientific networks and fostering new collaborations.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Thomas Stieglitz for his inspiring presentation, the stimulating discussions, and the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange.
