How do hearing implants restore communication? How can future implants detect infections before they become dangerous? Visitors to the IdeenExpo 2026 learned the answers firsthand through interactive exhibits presented by two research initiatives closely affiliated with the Lower Saxony Center for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research, and Development (NIFE): Hearing4all and SIIRI. As one of Europe's largest youth events for science and technology, the IdeenExpo provided an ideal platform for researchers to connect with thousands of young people, families, and educators and to demonstrate how biomedical engineering and translational research improve patients' lives. At the Hearing4all booth, visitors were immersed in the fascinating world of hearing research through hands-on demonstrations and conversations with scientists. The exhibition showcased how interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine, engineering, audiology, and neuroscience is driving innovation in hearing diagnostics, hearing aids, and cochlear implants. By making complex research topics accessible, the team inspired young visitors to consider careers in science and technology, while also highlighting the societal importance of hearing technologies. Just a few steps away, at the MHH booth, the SIIRI (Safety-Integrated and Infection-Reactive Implants) Collaborative Research Center invited visitors to become „Implant Heroes of Tomorrow.“ At several interactive stations, participants learned how smart implants of the future could actively detect infections and contribute to safer treatments. One of the most popular activities allowed visitors to cast their own implant model out of soap—resulting in around 4,000 „implants“ created over the course of the exhibition. Interactive games and demonstrations illustrated the challenges researchers face in developing smarter and safer medical implants. The booth also attracted high-profile visitors, including Falco Mohrs, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Science and Culture. The high level of public interest in both exhibitions underscores the importance of dialogue between research and society. As a hub where engineering, medicine, and the natural sciences collaborate under one roof, NIFE provides an environment that fosters precisely this kind of interdisciplinary innovation. The participation of Hearing4all and SIIRI in the IdeenExpo reflects NIFE’s mission to translate excellent research into technologies that improve healthcare while inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.“
