An inspiring afternoon as part of the SIIRI Implant Lecture Series highlighted the latest developments in implant and hearing research. Prof. Dr. Anke Leichtle, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology at Hannover Medical School (MHH), presented her lecture titled „Infection, Inflammation, and Regeneration in the Middle Ear—From Mechanisms to Translational Therapies.“. The focus was on inflammatory and regenerative processes in the middle ear and their significance for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Prof. Leichtle provided fascinating insights into the immunological and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic middle ear diseases. Particularly noteworthy was the consistent integration of basic research and clinical application: findings from research are intended to be directly translated into improved treatment options for patients. The presentation vividly illustrated the importance of interdisciplinary exchange between the natural sciences, engineering, and clinical practice. It is precisely this close collaboration that forms the foundation of the SIIRI research network and the SFB/TRR 298, which together drive progress in implant and hearing research. As the new director of the MHH’s ENT Clinic, Prof. Leichtle will continue the Hannover site’s internationally recognized implant-related research while also providing important impetus for the further development of translational ENT research. In doing so, she will strengthen the link between scientific excellence and clinical innovation in a sustainable manner.
